The South Dakota Department of Health is hiring a full-time Registered Nurse Health Facilities Surveyor to assist with protecting and promoting the health and safety of residents and patients in South Dakota's licensed health care facilities. The RN Health Facilities Surveyor is responsible for surveying patient activities, dietary, infection control, resident rights, and physical environment. The Surveyor's role is to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations for the protection of health and safety hazards. This position requires travel, offers a daily per diem and the use of a state vehicle while conducting surveys.

The selected candidate will have to travel to one of the main office locations for in office days which are located in Rapid City, Pierre, Mitchell, and Sioux Falls.

Travel and overnight stays are required for this position.

Licenses and Certifications:
The Registered Nurse candidate must be a licensed Registered Nurse eligible to practice in SD. Training for the survey process is through required online Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) courses and through precepted surveys in licensed healthcare facilities.

Knowledge of:

  • principles and practices of the disciplines providing services to patients and residents in health care facilities;
  • medical terminology;
  • the causes and control of diseases produced by unsanitary conditions.

  • provide technical assistance and information that contributes to the development of wider solutions or approaches to healthcare issues and situations;
  • conduct or review ongoing psychosocial, physical, and/or functional nursing assessments of individuals/families/populations to determine a plan of action/intervention;
  • conduct ongoing assessments of the care delivery processes of a particular healthcare population to promote change that will support desired outcomes;
  • review records, practices, and/or operations to assess the quality of care and to ensure appropriate inter-disciplinary communication for the continuity of care;
  • provide orientation and mentors/preceptors to junior colleagues, interns, and/or students to develop and prepare quality practitioners.

Ability to:

  • access all occupied areas of a health care facility to conduct inspections and complete the survey process.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
